The confraternities

The confraternities of Molfetta are ancient organisations with roots stretching back centuries; far more than simple religious associations, they were born as a spontaneous expression of local citizens, united under the institution of the lay confraternity, brought together by shared trade or social class and by a deep sense of charity and the solid virtues of Christian life.

The confraternities form a beating heart of Molfetta; their activities mark the rhythm of local life and nourish the profound sense of community that reaches its peak during the Holy Week processions.

Molfetta is home to ten confraternities: the Arciconfraternita di Santo Stefano, the oldest, founded around 1300 and known for its red robe; the Arciconfraternita della Morte, known for its black robe; the Confraternita dell'Assunta, del Buon Consiglio, della Purificazione, della Visitazione, del Carmine, di Loreto, della Concezione and di Sant'Antonio.

Each congregation represents, and is linked to, an ancient trade, as well as to the colour of the mazzetta, the cloak worn by members of the confraternity during the procession.
